For a long time, I believed one of my responsibilities as a human being was to become understandable.
To explain myself clearly enough.
To speak carefully enough.
To provide enough context.
Enough history.
Enough evidence.
Enough reasoning.
Enough pieces of myself that eventually everyone would arrive at the same conclusion.
Understanding.
But somewhere along the way I realized something.
Many people are not seeking understanding.
They are seeking confirmation.
Confirmation of what they already believe.
Confirmation of what they already feel.
Confirmation of the story they have already written.
And those are very different things.
Because understanding requires movement.
It requires curiosity.
It requires a willingness to allow new information to change old conclusions.
Many people never arrive there.
Not because they cannot.
Because they do not wish to.
And that is where I found my freedom.
The realization that I am not responsible for becoming understandable to everyone.
I am responsible for being truthful.
I am responsible for being present.
I am responsible for being honest.
The understanding belongs to them.
Or it doesn't.
And both outcomes are perfectly acceptable.
Because there comes a point where a person must stop translating themselves into smaller and smaller pieces.
Stop reducing themselves into simpler language.
Stop shrinking their complexity so others may feel comfortable.
There comes a point where you simply become.
Not explained.
Not defended.
Not justified.
Simply present.
And those who genuinely wish to understand will move closer.
Not because you became smaller.
But because they were finally willing to see.
Have a beautiful rising.
